Purpose Dogs vzw
To improve the low success rate of assistance dogs, we are working on a breeding programme where the best parents are selected to build a population with fewer hereditary problems.
When an assistance dog association currently purchases a puppy, in many cases it has only a 40 per cent chance of being successfully trained. That low success rate is a waste of the time and budget invested and remains stable from generation to generation, although the main causes (orthopaedic disorders and behavioural problems) have a hereditary basis. To increase the success rate of puppies, we are working with a breeding programme where the best parent dogs are selected to build a population with fewer congenital problems. Abroad, similar projects have already proven their effect (such as Guide Dogs National Breeding Centre, The seeing eye, Guiding eyes, Cesecah...).
